CAN/CSA-B335-04 – Safety Standard for Lift Trucks

Do I need a driver’s license to operate a forklift / lift truck?

No you do not need a driver’s license to operate a fork lift truck. However you must have received training – and this includes full-time, part time, seasonal, substitute, and occasional operators.

Does a forklift /lift truck have to be fitted with a seat belt?

All fork lifts manufactured since 1993 require a seat belt to be fitted.

Will trainees require a practical test as well as the theory provided by your course?

For due diligence purposes the employer should have a competent person perform the appropriate physical testing to ensure the proper use and maintenance of the lift trucks to be used. Unfortunately the regulations are not specific about the required qualifications of those deemed to be ’competent’. CSA standards require that only those qualified persons who have been trained regarding the inspection, operation, and application of an aerial platform, including the recognition and avoidance of hazards associated with the operation, shall operate an aerial platform.
